Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire someone? Can’t I do this myself?

Some people have the time, talent, and energy to write their own memoir, or interview family members for their life stories, or create a tribute book for a special anniversary. But for many people, a personal or family history project feels too overwhelming to tackle alone. Hiring a professional gives you peace of mind that the job will get done, and done well. As an experienced personal historian, I know how to ask questions that elicit memories and stories; edit interviews into an engaging narrative; and manage all phases of book production, from selecting photographs to coordinating with a printer.

How long will a project take?

Projects can range from a couple of months to a year or more, depending on the scope; the frequency, number, and length of interviews; and other variables.

What does it cost?

Each Legacies of a Lifetime project is customized to meet your needs. Prices for books depend on such factors as project scope, number and length of interviews, amount of research and editing required, number and condition of photographs and other images to be included, number of review and revision cycles, type of cover and binding, and number of copies. The price for writing and editing support is based on an hourly rate.

What if the person to be interviewed is nervous or has trouble remembering the past?

I like to refer to the interviews as informal, guided conversations. People are often surprised at how relaxed they feel once we start talking. And just the act of talking about the past can awaken memories, as can looking through old photographs, letters, certificates, and other memorabilia.

Can you work with someone who lives in another state from you?

Yes. We can work over the phone or via Skype, or I am happy to travel to conduct the interviews face to face.

Will I be able to review the manuscript before the final book is published?

The person being interviewed will review the manuscript before it’s incorporated into the layout and again before the book goes to print. If I am hired by someone other than the interviewee, it is the interviewee’s decision whether that person will also participate in any reviews.
